The Hunter Western Hornets, in conjunction with host affiliate the Mudgee Mudcrabs, ran a successful Don Green Western Junior Championships (DGWJC) over the weekend in the beautiful town of Mudgee.

A total of 43 teams converged on Mudgee and competed across Boys & Girls U8 to U18 divisions. The running of the event was a huge success, despite the challenges that mother nature through at us, with the original booking at Glen Willow Sporting Complex being washed out due to recent flood waters, the Mid-Western Council offering the grounds at Jubilee Oval, and then the lightning on Sunday morning  just to remind us that the weather could be a factor! But the competition was strong, the touch footy played was fantastic and the kids involved all left with smiles on their faces.

The host Mudgee Mudcrabs dominated the event on finals day, taking out 7 of 12 divisions on offer (Boys U8, U10, U18, and Girls U10, U12, U14, U18). Resulting in their inaugural Club Championship title!

Fellow western affiliate the Dubbo Devils put on a strong showing in a number of divisions, claiming 2 titles in Girls U8 and Boys U12 and will be pushing the Mudcrabs in future years being finalists in 5 other divisions . Newcastle City were champions in boys and girls 16s, and the Maitland Redbacks took out the Boys U14 division.

We would also like to thank the event hosts, Mudgee Mudcrabs for their huge effort to get the alternate venue up and running for the event, with the quality and range of food at the canteen a highly popular attraction.
